Jack the Ripper

For scholars of the Ripper case, (England’s Lizzie Borden), this summer looks like a bumper season. New from Peter Ackroyd is Jack the Ripper and The East End, a hefty volume containing copious maps, photographs and essays.  Amazon has a few used copies in the 40-60 dollar range. The book is enjoying mixed reviews, mostly positive all in all.  Those who don’t mind the depressing exchange rate for the dollar can visit the new Jack the Ripper Exhibit at the Museum in Docklands touted as “… the first time the public will have the opportunity to examine the original police documents relating to the murders and their investigation.”

For more information visit  http://www.molg.org.uk/English/NewsRoom/current  The exhibition runs through November 2nd.

From the dark mind of D.L. Marian comes another attempt at capturing Lizzie (a guilty version). The doll is on a Buy It Now status on ebay for $750.  She might be unnerving to wake up to on a stormy night. A new bride for Chucky?

Two New Lizzie Home Movies

Two mini-movies from Garden Bay Films have just been released. From the camera of videographer Richard Behrens, documentary maker, and producer of the multi-part Lizzie Borden series, these are short subjects about the court house being built across the street from #92 and the new house mascot.  As the giant building grows daily in size, there is some concern it will overwhelm its lot and cast a dark shadow on the Borden house across the street.

The second home movie features Max the Cat, a permanent fixture now at #92.  Max, formerly a tenant of the old Kelly house next door, has relocated in style to the Borden house and has a few words to say on film about his thoughts on who-dunnit!

R.I.P. Miss Lizzie

June 1 marks the date of the death of one of Fall River’s most notorious citizens.  Sister Emma would follow nine days later. The sisters had become estranged and had not seen each other in many years by the time of their deaths in 1927.

The word this week is that the Lizzie Borden episode, shot at the house on Second St. last winter, should air June 11th at 9 p.m.  The program usually showcases things like Big Foot, Champ, the Loch Ness creature, and other cryptozoology beasties. I wonder what this says about Lizzie?

There's no evidence of guilt, Lizzie Borden, That should make your spirit wilt, Lizzie Borden; Many do not think that you Chopped your father's head in two, It's so hard a thing to do, Lizzie Borden. You have borne up under all, Lizzie Borden. With a mighty show of gall, Lizzie Borden; But because your nerve is stout Does not prove beyond a doubt That you knocked the old folks out, Lizzie Borden. A.L. Bixby

♣ Lizzie and those pigeons

Lizzie's Inquest Testimony

Q. Can you tell of the killing of any animal? Or any other operation that would lead to their being cast there, with blood on them?
A. No sir. He killed some pigeons in the barn last May or June.
Q. What with?
A. I don't know, but I thought he wrung their necks.
Q. What made you think so?
A. I think he said so.
Q. Did anything else make you think so?
A. All but three or four had their heads on. That is what made me think so.
Q. Did all of them come into the house?
A. I think so.
Q. Those that came into the house were all headless?
A. Two or three had them on.
Q. Were any with their heads off?
A. Yes sir.
Q. Cut off or twisted off?
A. I don't know which.
Q. How did they look?
A. I don't know, their heads were gone, that is all.
Q. Did you tell anybody they looked as though they were twisted off?
A. I don't remember whether I did or not. The skin, I think, was very tender. I said, "Why are these heads off?" I think I remember of telling somebody that he said they twisted off.
Q. Did they look as if they were cut off?
A. I don't know. I did not look at that particularly.
Q. Is there anything else besides that that would lead, in your opinion so far as you can remember, to the finding of instruments in the cellar with blood on them?
A. I know of nothing else that was done.
