Lizzie and Fall River in print television and radio

  • Salem Witch?

     +=  ?????????

Salem is rumored to be the new hot spot for weekending for the Boston crowd but who would have thought it might become a venue for Lizzie Borden during the annual Salem Haunted Happening Madness in October.  Word has it that the Essex Street  Newmarket Gallery will be the hot spot for Lizzie to be hanging out come October 2008.  What would a Fall River girl have to say to all of this?

  • Friends of Oak Grove in the News

    arch.jpg

Yesterday’s Fall River Herald News featured a story on the new Friends group which has begun a program of planting trees at the historic Victorian cemetery.

     http://www.heraldnews.com/town_info/history/x1565510740

Oak Grove was begun in 1855 with a 47 acre parcel purchased from Dr. Nathan Durfee who sold it to the city for $200 per acre.  The entry arch was erected in 1873. The site http://oakgrovecemetery.wordpress.com features the Borden-Almy plot, Borden-related gravesites, and information on the Borden’s funeral.  Over 500 “hits” have come in over the past 24 hours to the site, with a lion’s share of visitors reading about how to become a member- with the Borden-related information a close second.  Lizzie still holds a fascination among the city’s population.

  • Lizzie’s Church- A Fortune to Repair

    steeple.jpg

The historic Central Congregational church at 100 Rock Street, now the Culinary Institute and Abbey Grille is undergoing emergency repairs to its steeple. After debris fell to the ground from the old spire a few weeks ago, the mayor has closed the street for a city block in front of the building, much to the dismay of merchants and businesses on the street.  Traffic is being re-routed until the facade is declared safe. Owner George Karousos said this week permanent repairs could cost $1.5 million to $2 million. Netting of the steeple began this week.  http://www.heraldnews.com/news/x1670184015

  • Lizzie Borden Live Postponed

LIZZIE BORDEN LIVE HAS BEEN POSTPONED DUE TO UNFORESEEN CIRCUMSTANCES.

jill_portrait.jpgThe 78th Street Theatre Lab must be vacated on March 8th, 9th and 10th (the  show dates). They are currently in the midst of an enormous construction project, which will eventually encompass 236 West 78th Street completely.

    http://www.linden78.com

The contractors have chosen this weekend to hoist steel girders over
the building, requiring the top two floors to be empty. This is a
safety issue and the city is requiring them to empty the building. Up
until today the theatre had been assured all construction activities
would be over by 6pm at the latest on any given day, and they would not be working at all on the weekends.

The apparatus used to raise the steel requires blocking off the entire
street, and because of traffic it can only happen over a weekend.

THEREFORE, LIZZIE BORDEN LIVE, is being postponed.

It looks like the new date is Sunday, April 20th @ 3 pm

LIZZIE BORDEN LIVE has also been selected as part of the Six Figures Theatre Company’s 6th Annual Artists of Tomorrow Festival with two performances:

    Friday, May 2nd @ 9 pm
    Sunday, May 4th @ 3 pm

    The West End Theatre
(Church of St. Paul & St. Andrew)
      263 West 86th Street
(bet. B’wy & West End Ave.)

Just a little late in finding this feature!  The city paper has added a blog with YouTube footage of the recent Victorian Christmas tour. This one features the Historical Society gift shop and recreation of McWhirr’s Department Store.  Hopefully there will be more.

The link below should take you to the video and article by staff reporter, Debbie Allard.

  • Fall River Doings

earthmover.jpgsecondstreet.jpgYesterday The digging began in earnest for the new courthouse on Second Street on Halloween.  The steam shovel at times seemed to be halfway to China, buried in the deep trench.

In other local news, the Fall River Herald and the Fall River Historical Society have pooled efforts to create a Remembering Fall River blog for natives to share photos and memories of the fine old city over the years.  Best wishes on this effort-it’s time Fall Riverites sang their own praises when others of us “aliens” have enjoyed blogging about the Spindle City for a long time!!

Over 62% of the vote went to Lizzie, along with some interesting comments sent in by the locals. The results and more can be found at this link  http://nupolls.com/result/35285/

  • In the News

news1_old.gifThere was exceptional news coverage this year about the doings on Second Street.  After the initial gaff about the wrong photo of Andrew Borden in the Herald News last Thursday, calls came in from as far away as Florida, Illinois and Nebraska to find out if the photo was a brand new discovery of Andrew Borden as a young man!  Channels 6, 10, and 12 out of Providence sent crews, as well as showing coverage Saturday and Sunday,  Newspaper interviews included the Worcester Telegraph, Providence Journal,  Fall River Herald News and the New Bedford Spirit.  The interviews were lots of fun for us all, but mostly great promotion for 92 Second Street.  Click on the photos below to read some of the coverage.

  • Facing up to a big mistake!

What’s in a name?  Apparently Andrew Borden, slain in 1892 in Fall River by any other name would still be in actuality Andrew Borden.  It’s when the face is clearly not the man that it’s time to question the copy editor at the Fall River Herald.

Today’s hard copy issue shows a younger chap in a twentieth century suit mugging shamelessly as the slaughtered Andrew Borden of Second Street.  Since this is Fall River- the scene of the murders, and Lizzie Borden Central- this is not merely a misdemeanor- it is a CRIME! Somebody call the police!  But maybe they are all on a picnic at Rocky Point. . . .  In any event, the story by Debbie Allard features some details of the upcoming Second Street doings for this coming Saturday, the anniversary of the murders.  Other than the usual few errors typical of nearly all interviews- the story is not bad.  But beware- make sure you have the right man on that black sofa.  Accept no substitutes! This is, the one- and ONLY Andrew Jackson Borden of 92 Second Street.  R.I.P. Mr. Borden, many Fall Riverites know your face even 115 years after your untimely demise.
